Here’s our 1971 beautiful mountain home but it definitely needed some remodeling! So, we are making it our own “heaven on earth” one room at a time, on a budget! We started with just saving and doing most of the work ourselves. Pinching pennies and using coupons as much as possible. Knowing when to say no to a new outfit, out to eat, etc. Saving as much as possible so this would be a debt free project.
My husband and I both work, have children and a busy schedule but wanted to put some work into our home to make it our own. We started by replacing the carpet up stairs in each bedroom and the hallway. Each room had a different type of carpet, it was definitely time to say goodbye. The next year we concentrated on saving for our main level bathroom. My husband discovered some moisture behind the wall (we were not sure of the cause ) so we had to gut the whole bathroom. Here’s a picture before we started.
I wished we had taken several pictures before and especially one behind that shower curtain. It was an ugly yellow old tile. It was terrible! My husband (with little construction experience) started hammering away and gutted the whole bathroom. We definitely live on a budget and had to save weekly in order for us to do this. It’s important for us to go into each project debt free. We live simply in order for us to be able travel with our children and enjoy experiences with them. Each trip we save for and each project we save for. My husband is a planner and budgets every dime to be able to afford the things that are important to us, family time and a heaven on earth home for our family. My husband worked hard and saved as much money as possible by doing everything he could do himself. We searched at second-hand stores and garage sales and on Facebook garage sales. You can find treasures at thrift stores and with a little paint and some adjustments you have something you have created yourself with half the price. We also found a lady that does custom work in her garage and is reasonably priced, so we have her building us a bathroom cabinet to go above the toilet. It was a lot cheaper than buying it online. We also compared paint prices, tile prices and anything that could save us a few dollars here and there. He has never laid tile before so we did have someone to come in and lay the tile flooring and install the shower door. We had several bids before choosing the right guy for the job. I recommend having several bids and doing your homework for each company before choosing the right company. Finding someone down the mountains was cheaper than to find someone in our community. We always looked up the performance, comments and surveys too. The saying “You get what you pay for, is definitely true”. Always do your homework when hiring someone to come into your home to do any kind of work. After a few months of working hard, (when you have to work around your full-time job and being with family, it takes longer but worth it!) it’s finally complete. Here’s a few pictures, and believe me, the pictures don’t do it justice! We love the rustic/farmhouse look so our Home will definitely have that feel! We are working on our second project now. We are turning our basement into a family room and adding a bathroom as well. We have really worked hard on it and I can’t wait till it’s complete! My heart is to have our Home “Heaven on Earth”. I love family time and love just being at home. I want our home to be “Heaven on Earth” one room at a time! I want my children to have a home that’s built with love for them!
